Ingle Slams FIFA’s Proposal for Biennial World Cup

British sports journalist, Sean Ingle, says FIFA’s proposal to hold a World Cup tournament every 2 years is a ridiculous plan that the football world could see become a reality.

In May 2021, FIFA made an official proposal of its intentions to conduct a feasibility study on hosting the soccer World Cup biennially.

Recently, some football associations, including Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh have pledged their support for the proposed plan.

However, some sporting personalities and football bodies are against the idea, as they believe it’ll have a negative impact on the current league campaigns.

According to Ingle, this proposal will increase the risk of player burnout, cause an increase in TV subscription fees, and make the schedule too ​​busy.

UEFA President, Aleksander Ceferin, has also acknowledged that he has “grave concerns” about the impact of a biennial World Cup on the football calendar, and that UEFA will oppose the proposal.

Arsene Wenger, who is FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development remains keen on increasing the frequency of the competition, saying that the change could be implemented sometime after 2024.
